Michael J. Fox will be awarded an honorary Oscar for his efforts to help cure Parkinson's disease. The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences said on Wednesday it will present the actor with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the Governors Awards in November.
The actor was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1991 and he founded the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research in 2000. Fox starred in the hit TV series Family Ties and Spin City and the Back to the Future movie franchise. He's won five Emmy Awards, four Golden Globes, a Grammy, and two Screen Actors Guild Awards but has never been nominated for an Oscar.
