Two teenagers were arrested for their involvement in a brawl at Bay Street Mall in Emeryville, California, that rendered an off-duty police officer unconscious. Police say the incident started when a woman confronted a group of teens, accusing them of stealing her phone earlier in the day.
The woman grabbed one of the teens by the arm, and he shoved her off as his friends circled around. A bystander tried to intervene and was viciously attacked by some of the teens. The bystander, who was an off-duty California Highway Patrol officer, briefly lost consciousness during the attack. He regained consciousness and managed to pepper spray one of the teens, who was still assaulting him. He suffered a concussion and a broken finger in the attack.
The officer said he was armed, but did not pull out his gun.
"There was a lot of restraint that had to be practiced. And I had to do my best to stay in the moment," he said.
Mall security eventually intervened and detained several of the teenagers. Two of them, ages 14 and 16, were arrested for their role in the fight. Police are still trying to identify six other suspects in the fight and released surveillance footage from the mall, hoping members of the public will recognize them.
