A bus driver in Virginia is being hailed as a hero for rescuing a toddler who was wandering alone in the middle of a busy street. Kelvin White was on his route when he saw the young girl pushing a stroller filled with stuffed animals. He immediately stopped his bus and rushed over to the girl, who was between two and three years old.
"It was hard seeing a girl pushing a stroller in the middle of traffic, unattended, no adults in the presence," White told WTKR. "It was frightening because I'm a father, and I wouldn't want to find my child out there in about situation."
He used his reflective vest to direct drivers out of the way, scooped up the girl, and brought her to safety.
"By the time I reached her, I was able to get her off from the street," White said. "Me and another unidentified man went door to door in the neighborhood trying to find maybe the mother or somebody who may know the child."
After checking around, they were unable to locate the girl's mother. White then brought the girl back to his bus and waited for the police to arrive. Eventually, the girl's mother was located the two were reunited.
Officials did not say why the girl was wandering the streets alone or if her mother will face any charges.
"I was very grateful for the actions that he took," White's supervisor Alex Brink said. "It was definitely nothing that we would necessarily expect an operator to do - put themselves in harm's way to do something like that."
