Silver Linings to Some Bad Habits

They say there's a silver lining to everything. So believe it or not there may be some good in some of those "bad" habits you may or may not have. Running late for instance can have its upside. An upside for YOU maybe. You'll annoy everyone else with that one, but for you it's not all bad. Lets investigate shall we.

  1. Running Late all the time. If you always think you can cram in more things than you have time for, it could mean you're an optimist. It's not your fault. It's your sunny demeanor. The experts say that people who are late a lot tend to be people who expect the best, even when it's not realistic
  2. Chewing gum. I guess I didn't realize this was a BAD habit, but if someone tells you that it is, kindly tell them that chewing gum makes you feel more alert and can actually boost your mood by reducing levels of the stress hormoe cortisol.
  3. Daydreaming. Studies have shown daydreaming to increase creativity. Harvard conducted a study that found when people "zone out" for about 12 minutes while working on a difficult task, they're more likely to find a solution when they return to the task.
  4. Using filler words like "um" and "uh." People who use these words a lot are often mocked, but recent research shows that although it may not SOUND very professional, those filler words may actually help others to absorb what someone is saying better. And isn't that the whole point of conversation?
  5. Complaining. Only if you do it right though. Venting to your dog isn't all that effective. But complaining about something that can be fixed can be a good thing. For instance if you direct a complaint to someone who can do something about it. That probably feels pretty good. I'll have to try it sometime.
